Former CARCASS Frontman Talks About Solo Album, Possible Reunion....

- June 23, 2006

Lords of Metal e-zine recently conducted an interview with former CARCASS frontman Jeff Walker. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

Lords of Metal: "Welcome To Carcass Cuntry" is your first solo album. How did you get the idea of releasing a solo album? And moreover, an album full of country and blues songs?

Jeff Walker: "Well, I have never really bumped into musicians again that I could be in a band with, to a certain extent, back in the U.K. So I couldn't see myself getting a band together you know, advertising, trying to hang out with people I don't know. For me being in a band is all about being able to get on with people, having a good time, having fun, having a laugh. I saw this as a project that I could do, and take control of and see through. To be honest, the idea of doing a solo album is a joke, to a certain extent. I am not very artistically, it's more kind of tongue-in-cheek, it's kind of 'Who the fuck do I think I am?,' you know, and that's the irony. I mean, originally the project was going to have a band name, but in the end it's much more funny to say it's a solo album, because I guess, ultimately it is. It's what I wanted to do, I picked the songs and asked people to play on it. I was really into some country stuff and I thought some of it would really lend itself to be done in a kind of, for lack of a better term, metal style, in a kind of TROUBLE, BLACK SABBATH kind of thing. Because I wanted to do a really miserable album, like the first CATHEDRAL record and I really love TROUBLE, so I wanted something really soulful and morose and something with a lot of pathos, and I think a lot of the old classic country songs have a lot of soul to them. I thought it was kind of a neat idea, so that was it really. And then I got a message from Lee from CATHEDRAL saying that Ville Valo from H.I.M. was asking whatever happened to me. There was talk at one point that maybe we would do a band together or so. I remember I made a joke, 'Well if it doesn't sound like country done in the style of TROUBLE or ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA then let's not bother". I mean that was a joke. And the funny thing is, it just sounds like it, it's kind of a hybrid of that kind of stuff. Funny how it turned out."

Lords of Metal: How did you pick the songs for the album?

Jeff Walker: "Some of them I wanted to do, as in 'You're Still On My Mind' and 'I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You', but originally when I went to Helsinki I thought the recording would just be used as a demo or something, but some of the stuff we were recording we were kind of forging ahead without stopping and I just took songs that I love or my girlfriend loves or other people like. Again, it had nothing to do with thought or trying to be cool, I could have picked the really obscure country songs, to be like really cool. But these songs are quite popular and well known and it was also important whether it would work or not. For example, the songs 'I Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Was In', the original is kinda very bizarre, off the wall, it's not even country at all. I was in Helsinki wondering how the hell could we do this song, and it just kind of came to me. Yeah, we'll do it CANDLEMASS speed. It was a real organic process, it wasn't that well planned or thought out. Literally, I was here in England on a Saturday and thought 'Fuck it, I am going to go to Helsinki and do it,' I called Gas and he was free, so I was on the plane to Helsinki on Monday, it was as simple as that."

Lords of Metal: You have most probably already read a couple of reviews for the album. How are the fans and press reacting on the album?

Jeff Walker: "I've only seen two and I've read some of the reactions on Blabbermouth from some 14-year-old kids in the States saying it is gay, [laughs] but that doesn't bother me. At the end of the day I am doing this to please myself and it's not a CARCASS record. It's a record for people my age who still appreciate extreme music, but at the same time like all kind of music. The irony is, I am still involved in heavy shit, I mean I just came back from Mexico playing bass for BRUJERIA and I'm kind of still involved with TO SEPARATE THE FLESH FROM THE BONES. I am still involved with doing heavier shit, you know. But I just can't exist by recycling the same old stuff. I could go back to playing in the style of 'Reek of Putrefaction' and I could back to playing in the style of 'Heartwork'. I am very privileged in that every record that I've ever been on sounds completely different. I think there's a lot of bands out there whose albums all sound the same."

Lords of Metal: Ever since CARCASS split up ten years ago there were rumours about you guys reuniting. You have most probably also been offered a lot of money to perform at festivals like Wacken Open Air. I know that some of the reuniting bands that play there receive astronomical amounts of money. Are you waiting for the market value of CARCASS to peak or is there really no chance that you are ever going to come together again as CARCASS?

Jeff Walker: "Some people have approached us yeah, and I mean, Wacken have approached us this year, but no money was mentioned. But I remember Barney from NAPALM DEATH, telling me he had heard we had been offered a million dollar to do a show haha. I was also talking to our old agent and another agent someone said we could do an excellent amount of money for a gig and we were kind of, 'What the fuck!?,' you know. But, at the end of the day, Bill is doing FIREBIRD now, he still plays. I mean, I like to think that we could do it again tomorrow, you know. But Bill is not really thrashing at his guitar no more. That doesn't mean he couldn't do it, but he's not been doing it for so long now, he would have to retrain some of the stuff. We'd never do it for the money though. Bill has got to believe in what he's doing, so that's probably one of the reasons why CARCASS won't reform. He doesn't want to do it. And I am not going to spend the rest of my life trying to convince him to do it. And if we wait another five years we'll be too old haha."

AEROSMITH In Classic Frame Of Mind On New Album....

- June 23, 2006

Jonathan Cohen of Billboard.com is reporting that AEROSMITH is in the thick of work on its new studio album, which should be out in spring 2007 via Columbia. The process had not been hindered by vocalist Steven Tyler's recent throat surgery, according to guitarist Joe Perry. "He's sounding better than ever," Perry tells Billboard.com. "Even just listening to him talk, his voice has this timbre that I haven't heard for years."

In addition to considering material from outside songwriters, AEROSMITH is looking to its archives for inspiration.

"There's some stuff we left off certain records that we've been scratching our heads over why that happened," Perry says. "There's also bits and pieces of things we haven't got to, and some stuff from [the 2004 blues album] 'Honkin' on Bobo' that never got finished. We want to bring some of the elements of the experimenting we've done on the albums over the last few years and mash that in with that 'Honkin' on Bobo'-kind of energy."

- June 23, 2006

"Regresando Odio" ("Returning the Hate"), the new video from ASESINO — the death metal/grindcore project featuring ex-FEAR FACTORY/BRUJERIA guitarist Dino Cazares and STATIC-X bassist Tony Campos (on bass/vocals) — will receive its MTV2 debut on this weekend's edition of "Headbanger's Ball", which is scheduled to air Saturday, June 24 beginning at 10:00 p.m. "This will mark the first time in MTV history to broadcast a music video by a Mexican death metal/grindcore group with all lyrics sung in Spanish!" The "Regresando Odio" clip was directed by John Buchanan of Demon Video.

As previously reported, Cazares will be appearing on this weekend's edition of MTV2's "Headbanger's Ball" as part of a discussion panel on heavy metal "hot topics," including the Sharon Osbourne vs. IRON MAIDEN fiasco, heavy metal reality shows, the state of metal, and metal blogs. Other musicians slated to appear are Al Jourgensen (MINISTRY), Trevor Phipps (UNEARTH), and Mercedes Lander (KITTIE). Also scheduled to air during the program's second hour at 11:30 p.m. EST is a 30-minute "Stage Fright" special dedicated to MOTÖRHEAD. Culled from the spectacular DVD of the same title (released earlier this year on SPV), the program contains a healthy selection of MOTÖRHEAD favorites along with some backstage interview footage of Lemmy and the band.

The first single (which can be heard on the band's MySpace profile) is entitled "Regresando Odio" ("Returning the Hate") and features HATEBREED's Jamey Jasta as El Odio on backing vocals and Andreas Kisser (SEPULTURA) on lead guitar. AC/DC: Classic Albums Reach New Sales Heights....

- June 23, 2006

Two classic AC/DC albums have reached new sales heights as of May 25, 2006, according to the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America). The band's 1979 album, "Highway to Hell" — the last studio release to feature late frontman Bon Scott — has been certified septuple platinum for sales in excess of seven million copies in the United States. Meanwhile, 1990's "The Razor's Edge" has passed the five-million mark in the U.S., earning it quintuple-platinum status.

AC/DC's "Back in Black" album was certified last year for U.S. shipments of 21 million copies, tying it for fifth place with BILLY JOEL's "Greatest Hits Vol. 1 & II" on the Recording Industry Assn. of America's all-time best-sellers list.

AC/DC are expected to begin recording their next studio album in the U.K. later in the year. The group's last album, "Stiff Upper Lip" (2000), was recorded at the Warehouse studio (owned by Bryan Adams) in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

TERRORIZER Announce Release Date For New Album 'Darker Days Ahead'....

- June 23, 2006

Reunited grindcore pioneers TERRORIZER will release their highly anticipated second album, "Darker Days Ahead", on August 22 via Century Media Records.

With an aggression and ferocity until then unheard the band took the scene by storm with the 1989 release of their highly acclaimed and genre-defining debut album, "World Downfall" (Earache Records). The album installed the band as a cult institution, despite their prompt disbanding, and the musicians went on to concentrate on their future main bands: Pete Sandoval (drums) with MORBID ANGEL and Jesse Pintado (guitars) with NAPALM DEATH.

With "World Downfall" TERRORIZER created the "Reign In Blood" of grindcore, inspiring a generation of bands, their popularity never waning through these intervening years. The massive amount of available bootleg recordings and band merchandise, as well as rumors of a follow-up album, kept the TERRORIZER name alive.

The eleven new tracks, as well as a new version of the band's classic "Dead Shall Rise" now entitled "Dead Shall Rise V.06", were recorded at Juan "Punchy" Gonzalez' D.O.W. (Diet of Worms) Studios (MORBID ANGEL, CHRISTIAN DEATH), resulting in a more mature, sinister piece of death/grind, fuelled with contempt and a harsh outlook on the status of our present and future world. "Darker Days Ahead" is trademarked by Jesse Pintado's and Tony Norman's (MORBID ANGEL, ex-MONSTROSITY) unmistakably feral sounding guitar tone and Pete Sandoval's skin-flaying blast beats. Joined by vocalist Anthony Rezhawk (RESISTANT CULTURE), who renders an outstanding performance, TERRORIZER unleash a brutal tempest predicting the darkest of days.

BLEED THE SKY Guitarist In 'Critical' Condition At Louisville Hospital....

- June 23, 2006

Orange County's BLEED THE SKY have issued the following statement regarding the condition of their guitarist Wayne Miller, who was recently hospitalized in Louisville while the band was on tour with DOPE:

"We all went and saw Wayne at the hospital today in Louisville. According to the doctors he has severe pneumonia caused by some sort of viral infection which they haven't pinpointed yet. The infection has caused lots of complicatons where he's essentially on life support to breathe for him, keep him hydrated and protect against further infection. They thought it was an appendicitis at first, and then a form of strep thoat, but now they're not sure. His condition, they said, is critical but stable. We're going to be here until he gets back on his feet, so any shows as of now, we will not be playing until further notice. Based on what we saw, he doesn't look like he's going to be getting out of that bed any time soon, it's really serious."

BLEED THE SKY's debut album, "Paradigm In Entropy", is available now on Nuclear Blast Records.

Formed in early 2003, BLEED THE SKY specialize in "mixing groovy metal riffs with distinctive melodies and profound lyrics." The band have previously shared the stage with such acts as AMERICAN HEAD CHARGE, MURDERDOLLS, MY RUIN, SKINLAB and DEICIDE.

CIRCLE OF DEAD CHILDREN Part Ways With Drummer, Seek Replacement....

- June 20, 2006

Pennsylvania's CIRCLE OF DEAD CHILDREN have issued the following update:

"Mike Bartek [drums] is no longer a part of CODC and for the indefinite time being we are forced into hiatus. We apologize to the promoters and bands we have had shows booked with as well as the fans, as we were about 3/4 of the way through the next full-length release. There was absolutely no way around this.

"Mike had a list of 'qualities' that would have had him tossed from most bands, but friendship was what mostly kept him with us. This time he crossed way over the line and defecated on any concepts of friendship and respect possible and stooped lower than we thought even he would ever go.

So he is gone and an ugly part of the CIRCLE's past and, for anyone who has followed CODC through the years, we are once again in the situation of finding a new member. Joe, Jason and Drew have decided to continue on and feel that ultimately, Mike's departure will be a huge blessing in disguise for CODC. After three drummers, three bass players and three guitarists, the machine will hopefully continue on. Plenty of skulls still need crushed.

"We will begin tryouts for a new drummer asap. If interested, please contact CODC at salo120@circleofdeadchildren.net We are located in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area."

CIRCLE OF DEAD CHILDREN's last release, "Zero Comfort Margin", came out in July 2005 via Willowtip Records.

CIRCUS OF POWER: Footage From Upcoming 'Road To Ruin' Available Online....

- June 20, 2006

The CIRCUS OF POWER "Dead Flowers" segment from the upcoming "Road To Ruin" film directed by Drew Stone can be viewed at www.circusofpower.net.

CIRCUS OF POWER members Ricky Beck Mahler (guitar), Alex Mitchell (vocals), Ryan Maher (drums) and Marc Frappier (bass) reunited for a "20th Anniversary Show" June 3 at The Elysium in Austin, Texas. They performed their classic 1988 self-titled debut in its entirety as well as the songs "Dreams Tonight" and "Vices".

The controversial new film by Drew Stone (MTV's "True Life" – "I Live To Ride" episode; "Urban Street - Bike Warriors" trilogy; AGNOSTIC FRONT's "Gotta Go") deals with the confusion, anguish and joy of being addicted to rock and roll 20 years down the line. A celebration of the survival of the "rock 'n' roll spirit" past 2010, the new movie is also expected to include footage from the STIGMATA reunion show, which featured SHADOWS FALL drummer Jason Bittner. "Road to Ruin" is scheduled for an April 2007 release.

Says Stone regarding the CIRCUS OF POWER reunion show: "It was a real thrill to see this great band back together on stage playing all the songs from their influential first record. The footage came out great but most of all seeing old friends put the past behind them and play music we all love was the real payoff for me. That’s the spirit of the 'Road To Ruin' film. I'm not going to even get into any crap about 'rock's coming back.' I've got some news for you… ROCK'S BACK…. and this is coming from a guy who's made a career doing rap videos."

ILL NINO Frontman Explains Concert Cancellation....

- June 20, 2006

ILL NINO frontman Cristian Machado has posted the following message on the band's official web site:

"First and foremost: To the thousands of ILL NINO fans that we will not get to see due to our cancellation, I sincerely apologize for the inability to perform this show and promise a prompt and rescheduled return. If you read on you'll begin to understand the reasons why the cancelations were necessary.

"After experiencing incredible amounts of extreme travel situations over the past 3 days, which included everything from flight delays, taking 6 flights in 54 hours, and still performing 3 intense and full length shows on only 4 hours of sleep in 78 hours, I will not be able to vocally perform. The details are long and extensive, and include everything from lost luggage, problems with ground transportation, and stolen gear. The sad thing is that's not even the whole story. Honestly, the experience was something ILL NINO can write a book about.

"Anyone who has ever seen an ILL NINO concert knows that we are no fucking chumps and 'kill it' every single night we get onstage. After 6 years of extensive and rigorous touring I have never cancelled a single show and we will always continue to bring a consistent and killer live performance at every venue we play. But, after having endured the hardest touring complications ILL NINO has ever been faced with, and the unexpected travel situations, my vocal cords have taken a beating and I am forced to cancel tonight's performance. Not to mention my body is literally 'shutting the fuck down.' Realizing that my instrument is internal, and to prevent further damage to my vocal chords, I have been consulted by doctors to cancel the remainder of the tour. However, I am not one to go down without a fight so I will do whatever is necessary in order to complete the remainder of the shows. I just want to add that the shows in Portugal, Spain, and Germany were incredibly insane and your energy was energizing. Once again, I personally apologize for the cancellation. There is nothing that I can do except seclude myself in a hotel room for the next 24 hours and hope I get better.

"I really want to thank the thousands of ILL NINO fans that came to the Portugal, Spain, and German shows. It is needless to say that all of the shows were intense and we still performed our hearts out every night. I will take the day off, receive a cortisone shot and give my all to continue the tour. I would really like to thank my band members and crew guys for not only enduring this extraneous and exhausting experience but also for being understanding about my vocal condition.

"Much respect to Kenny from the local SHIVER in Fulda, Germany for coming up on stage to help me sing 4 of the 15 songs. And yes, we performed our full set even though I had to push my voice to its limits. If anyone is going to post this anywhere else @ least have the courtesy to add the first two paragraphs which addresses our fans. They mean the world to us and we would never want to let them down."

ILL NINO's latest album, "One Nation Underground", was released last September via Roadrunner Records. The follow-up to 2003's "Confessions" was produced by Scrap 60 (ANTHRAX, ILL NINO, CRADLE OF FILTH, BLEEDING THROUGH).

MOURNING BELOVETH Begin Writing New Material....

- June 20, 2006

Irish doom metal act MOURNING BELOVETH have posted the following message on their official web site:

"Back from tour with PRIMORDIAL, MOONSORROW and our labelmates GARDENS OF GEHENNAH and it was probably the best tour yet, well organised, well attended and some great reactions. We even got to play Hungary, Vienna and Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig where we hadn't been before and each night we were shouted back for more, even some slow handclapping some nights. Sold out shows in Arnheim and Biebob told the story of the tour really. People appreciating bands who play from the heart and not the usual merry-go-round of touring bands. Last weekend saw us appear with PRIMORDIAL again in London, another triumph for Irish metal as the attendance was close to the 300 mark. A great crowd response and some dodgy singing in the Intrepid fox later made sure we would be remembered.

"As you know we are confirmed for Party.San [Open Air festival] in Germany on August 12th, we play at 3pm…should be a nice sunny day for some miserable music and just confirmed this week we will be playing on August 10th at Brutal Assault festival in Czechoslovakia very late in the evening …all this coming on the back of the annual trek to Wacken and it should lead to a few lost livers and braincells.

"July should see the re-release, through Grau, of our first two albums, namely 'Dust' and 'The Sullen Sulcus' with no new material added however the artwork of 'Dust' will be slightly changed in line with our new paymasters…haha.

"The new album is coming along slowly, being broken up every few weeks with another gig but we are now going to concentrate on writing for the next few months. One song written already and a lot of ideas floating around but too early to tell anything yet."

EXODUS Guitarist Sets Record Straight Regarding Zurich Cancellation....

- June 20, 2006

EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt has posted the following message on the band's official web site:

"Okay people, I have finally made it to Zurich. Let me set the record straight.

"After playing Lorca Rock festival (awesome show, big thanks to everybody involved) we had to drive four hours to Valencia airport instead of Alacante, which is one hour away. Our tickets were so fucked up, they had us flying to Zurich via London. This should have been a two-hour flight with a one-hour drive to the airport. Instead it was about a total of nine hours. But the big problem was we were given an unreasonable amount of time to change flights to Zurich. We were not transfering on the same airline, we had to walk 20 minutes, go through passport control, and get our bags, and head to the ticketing counter to check in for our flight. In thirty minutes. Do the math. We ended up stuck in London for about five hours until we could catch the only flight we could afford (and find) that would get us off the isle. Which put us in Nice all night, sleeping on benches like hobos. This whole nightmare began at 4 in the morning on the 18th, and about thirty something hours later we made it to Zurich to pick up our remaining crew and backline.

"This has sucked more than you could ever imagine, and if you do not believe me you can walk a mile in my shoes. Now, don't get me wrong. I love where my shoes take me, for better or worse.

"This has been a disaster of epic proportions. But the three shows we have done have ruled. Believe me when I say heads will roll over this.

"As for someone's comment about bathing in the sea?

"I hate the water."

EXODUS are continuing to tour in support of their latest CD, "Shovel Headed Kill Machine", which was released in October 2005 via Nuclear Blast Records. Recorded at Trident studios in Pacheco, California and mixed by Andy Sneap (MACHINE HEAD, ARCH ENEMY), the follow-up to 2004's "Tempo of the Damned" is the band's first to feature new members Lee Altus (guitar; HEATHEN), Paul Bostaph (drums; ex-SLAYER, TESTAMENT, FORBIDDEN) and Rob Dukes (vocals).

HEAVEN SHALL BURN: 'Deaf To Our Prayers' To Arrive In August....

- June 20, 2006

August 28 will see the release of "Deaf to Our Prayers", the long-awaited follow-up for HEAVEN SHALL BURN's highly acclaimed album "Antigone".

"Finally, we are holding the masters for our new CD, 'Deaf To Our Prayers', in our hands and we are pretty certain that we've recorded an album that'll be a more than worthy successor for 'Antigone',", says guitarist Maik Weichert.

The recording of "Deaf To Our Prayers" was once again done at Rape Of Harmonies Studios in beautiful Thüringen. "Patrick W. Engel and Ralf Müller have added their share another time and we cannot picture working on an album without them," the band said.

For the first time, HEAVEN SHALL BURN used Jacob Hansen and his Hansen Studios in Denmark for the mix. "We had a great time in Ribe, the oldest city in Denmark, and worked extremely hard on getting the maximum out of the new songs. Right from the beginning of the writing process we had the vision to record a raw and direct album. I think 'Deaf To Our Prayers' is a lot more brutal than 'Antigone' while still having some mid-tempo passages. Simply 100% HSB!"

As on their previous albums, HEAVEN SHALL BURN don't just have intense music to offer, but also food for thought. "The title 'Deaf To Our Prayers' is influenced by a line from a poem by Heinrich Heine that dealt with the situation of industrial workers from Silesia in the 19th century," the band said. "Other songs like 'Of No Avail' or 'The Final March' were influenced by Gerhard Hauptmann's drama 'The Weavers'. Especially the situation of the workers in the 19th century, the so-called Industrial Revolution, shows oppressive parallels to current developments in our society that's highly affected by globalisation."

However, "Deaf To Our Prayers" is also dealing with other historic aspects. "'Armia', for example, is about the hopeless, 64-day fight that Polish partisans fought against the occupying power in the battle of Warsaw in August 1944," the band said. "Again, we stayed away from topics such as heartache, problems with parents and 'I'll kill every single one of you.' We know that there are people out there who want to use their heads for banging AND thinking — that's what we are about."

SEPULTURA's ANDREAS KISSER Talks About Departure Of IGOR CAVALERA....

- June 17, 2006

On Thursday, June 15, SEPULTURA guitarist Andreas Kisser spoke exclusively to BLABBERMOUTH.NET about the recent departure of drummer and founding member Igor Cavalera and the group's future plans. A transcript of the chat follows:

Q: Igor told me a couple of days ago that it was as far back as December 2004 — during his last European tour with SEPULTURA — that he started having these strong feelings of not enjoying himself on stage and not really wanting to be on the road with the band anymore. Were you aware back then that there were problems? I mean, was it something that you had discussed even during that time?

Andreas: "Yeah, definitely. He wasn't really enjoying that much being away from Brazil. Especially because he was recently separated from his wife, with more than 16 years together and three kids, and he just got a new wife and new kid. I mean, for any man — it doesn't matter what kind of profession you are — it's a crazy deal, it's very disturbing. It's like you have to really review your whole life pretty much. And, of course, SEPULTURA… we were working on the MOTÖRHEAD tour and then working on the new album and stuff. But, you know, we talked a lot, actually. We did pretty much this together. I mean, he was aware of our intention to continue, especially because we had the new album and everything — to do the tours and find Roy [Mayorga, SEPULTURA's fill-in drummer during the European tour with IN FLAMES], etc. I mean, we respect his decision. I cannot [force] someone to be on stage who doesn't feel it. And especially for SEPULTURA — we always gave 100 percent of our everything to be on stage and… I have my family myself and kids, and for me it's hard also to leave, and to be away, but my situation is much more stable. I'm together with my wife for 16 years etc. So it's pretty understandable that he was confused in the head and all — he was not really enjoying being on the road. We had a break — I don't know… around 3-4 months. He said he wanted to treat himself and talk to some people and find some professional help — really put his head in place — but he never really got that feeling back, to be on the road and to promote the new album etc."

Q: Is this the break earlier this year that you are talking about or is this some other break you are referring to?

Andreas: "No, that was last year. It was before we started working on 'Dante XXI'. Well, we were working on 'Dante' since August 2004, but before we went actually into the studio to record and everything, we had this break and all. And we did the album and stuff, and everything was cool, but he was never really giving any signs of being excited to be on the road."

Q: Did it affect the songwriting process as well, in your opinion?

Andreas: "I don't know. Everything affects the songwriting — for good or bad. I mean, it doesn't matter… It could be a good situation or a bad situation. I guess everything [was] positive, because he was really into the album — he brought a lot of ideas. The guy who did the album cover — all the paintings — it was his choice; André Moraes, the co-producer [of the 'Dante' album], he really wanted to work with him and [experiment with] drum loops, and stuff like that. So you know, it was really cool — the studio was fine — but we were concerned to see what would be the next step after the studio; we wanted to have him on the road with us to at least finish the cycle of the album. And then we could stop and think about the future. My intention here now is really to… We found this new drummer from Belo Horizonte [Jean Dolabella, ex-UDORA], also, coincidentally. [Igor and his brother Max formed SEPULTURA in Belo Horizonte before moving to Sao Paulo — Ed.] Our intention is really to finish all the dates that we have ahead of us and try to play as much as we can — to finish the cycle, to honor the contract with SPV etc."

Q: Igor said in the interview I did with him a couple of days ago that there was a point before you guys went to Europe [for the tour with IN FLAMES] when you all apparently agreed to take a break as a band and regroup at some point down the line. But then he said that after you came back from Europe, it seemed like you had changed your mind and you wanted to continue touring, with or without him. Is that how you remember the course of events as well?

Andreas: "Around the whole process, we all changed a lot — not only the band itself, but individually [as well] about what we should do. I mean, before we left for Europe, I went to talk to him and stuff and he wanted to be involved but without being on the road. I thought that was very difficult, you know, because… I mean, he's the best at what he does on stage — playing drums. And I always made it clear that we wanted to finish what we started — to finish with our heads up and not really… like we did with Max on the 'Roots' tour; we had to stop and really review everything. We didn't finish that part of our career. Our intention, really, was to finish this, because we had so much great support from SPV, a lot of excitement, we did the video clip [for 'Convicted in Life'], we just finished the live DVD and all, and the album [received] a lot of really good response overall by fans and critics, and on stage with Roy, it was really awesome — it was amazing to have Roy there [playing] with a lot of passion and putting 100 percent into it. It was really cool that he also brought some suggestions from old songs, to do something different. That was really exciting and stuff. And you know, he knew that our intention was really to finish the cycle and to play as much as we could. And it was very difficult to have him in the band but without him playing on the road. He's great on the merchandising stuff — all the stuff that he did for the band — and the idea was for him to stay doing stuff like that, like making decisions; you know, like continue to work like more as an office guy instead of being on the road. But I guess he decided to announce [his departure] now, because maybe he has some different projects that he wants to move on [with], and he wanted to decide this first. I mean, what can I say? We respect the timing and all, but… It's a sad situation. I wish we could be together still, at least to finish this. I also have my solo album too and I have many other different projects and stuff, but I have a commitment with SEPULTURA, especially with this album and stuff, and I wanna finish this before I start something new."

Q: But I'm not sure if it's completely clear what exactly transpired between January 2006 and June 2006 to cause him to change his mind with regards to his status in the band. From your point of view, was there anything that happened that triggered this announcement — like a disagreement or something of that sort?

Andreas: "I don't know. I think he expected us to stop and… I don't know… finish everything and not continue with SEPULTURA. I don't know. We wanted him to wait, at least to finish this cycle and stuff, and then sit down and decide our future. I have no intentions to record another SEPULTURA album with somebody different. My intention really here is to finish the cycle. Especially because we had a great experience with Roy in Europe. I really believe this new guy is gonna bring a lot of new feelings, a new challenge for us. Our profession is moved by challenge, especially music, as we try so much different stuff and travel so many different places. As long as it's exciting… it's gonna be a whole learning experience. But I don't know… Like I said, he decided to announce [his departure] now, maybe because he has something else going on. Fine. But if I had the choice, I'd rather wait a little more and decide this later, but he decided to do this now, like I said, and we respect his decision."

Q: You said that you have no intentions of recording another SEPULTURA album without Igor. But the first statement that was posted on your web site after Igor made his announcement sort of implied that you would carry on, because I think it said something like, "SEPULTURA will continue."

Andreas: "Yeah, that's kind of decision that we don't have to [make] now. There are so many different elements that could change a lot. Like I said, our intention… We have this guy now, Jean, with us on the drums, we did some tests and stuff, we did some practicing, we were all very impressed by his playing and stuff. Our intention is to play. I don't know if it could go until the end of this year, or the end of next year. Hopefully we can do some festivals in Europe and really represent this album, work this album, and then we [can] decide if we're gonna continue or not. I mean, the message [posted on the web site] is that we're gonna continue with the 'Dante' cycle and see what's next. But what I can tell you now is that I don't feel like doing another SEPULTURA album right now, especially without Igor. It's something that we're not even thinking about. Our attitude is really immediate — really to finish this stuff and really clear this from our life, and finish this and feel good about it, and then make the decision together and talk about it."

Q: Igor also implied in his interview that there were some problems between you guys in the way you communicated and interacted with each other, and that it's something that became worse and worse over time. Do you feel that there were communication problems between Igor and the rest of the band that might have contributed to his decision to leave?

Andreas: "Yeah. I mean, besides Igor being married to Monika [Igor's first wife] for so long, Monika worked with the band also. So after the separation, Igor was finding it very difficult with the day-do-day business of SEPULTURA, especially because Monika was involved. It's really hard to change all the structure, especially because Monika was together [working] with us for so long, so quickly like that. So I guess in that respect the communication between all of us got a little bit weird. Everything around his personal life, or around personal lives, has a very strong influence on what we do together as a band, and he changed a lot. It's very understandable — he changed his wife and family and stuff. I just think he saw an opportunity, really, to make a bigger change in his life — not only in his personal life, but also professionally. I mean, you know Igor well, like I do, and stuff, and it's his style — he's very quiet, whatever, and it's hard for him to express what he really feels and etc. and it's something that is personal, something that is [part of] his character, something that… it's natural, whatever. I think it feels that it was his style to start something new. I mean, after 22 years together, being away from his brother for so long, it's very heavy situation. I think it's a ridiculous situation — especially between [Igor and Max], brothers by blood and stuff like that. I don't know… I think he feels that he can do something new and at the same time look back and try to resolve his stuff, his problems."

Q: You mentioned earlier that you have no intention of recording another SEPULTURA album without Igor, but you are not completely ruling it out. I mean, you basically will make that decision when the time is right.

Andreas: "Exactly. Like I said, I cannot really make any decisions now. I'm just telling you what I feel today. But it doesn't mean that [it's the way it's going to be]. I mean, Paulo and Derrick can feel a little different about the same topic, but that’s something that we're still gonna talk about and we're gonna live through the day we really have to decide something about that. And it's cool because we're clear with SPV, the contracts — we had two albums and everything — so I think we can make this decision a lot… it's easier; we don't have the obligation to do another album."

Q: So you're not signed to SPV right now?

Andreas: "We were dealing with some stuff for the next album when Igor was in the band and everything, but it depends a lot on what's gonna happen — now on the road, and with the drummer. There's a lot of elements that could decide to go either way. But let's wait."

Q: So were you surprised when Igor told you that he was going to make this announcement?

Andreas: "No, not really. Not surprised. I just thought it was kind of premature to announce it now. But we talked about this already."

Q: You mentioned that you had other projects lined up, and I saw on the Internet that you're still doing these other gigs in Brazil in the meantime. How much of a focus will be on SEPULTURA, as far as touring for the next few months, compared to the solo stuff that you're doing? 'Cause I think you're still working on your solo album, right?

Andreas: "Yeah. I've been working on my solo album for the last three years, or four years, and I'm doing it very slowly. I wanna enjoy [the process] and invite a lot of people to play [on it] and etc. But you know, SEPULTURA, of course, is my priority, especially because we have a new guy and we have the album and stuff, and let's see where can we go, and how many we can play. The intention, really, is to be on the road as much as we can — to go back to Europe and hopefully to play in the States — we haven't played in the United States in more than three years. The intention's really to be on the road."

Q: Is the U.S. tour now confirmed or is that still up in the air?

Andreas: "It's still up in the air — [it's] ninety-whatever percent. [Laughs]"

Q: I think you mentioned in another interview that you are supposed to be going out with HATEBREED.

Andreas: "Yeah, we're talking to HATEBREED and Jamey [Jasta] about doing something together in August/September. Let's see if it happens. It would be great."

Q: I've seen some videos of Roy playing with SEPULTURA and I agree with you that he did a great job. But I think that the attitude of the fans might be a little bit different this time around now that it has been announced that Igor is actually out of the band. How do you respond to those fans who say that SEPULTURA shouldn't continue without Igor — touring or otherwise?

Andreas: "Well, I heard that before — 10 years ago. I mean, it was not possible to have SEPULTURA without Max. And we did what we did, and we're still here talking about it. Let's see what happens. Anything is possible. I cannot really rule out any option. We could be surprised by what could happen; it could be something big or it could be a disaster. You never know. With Roy also, it was something that we didn't know what to expect, you know. But when you have musicians on stage that play the music honestly and enjoy what they're doing, I mean…. You know, there's no wrong. I mean, besides all the politics — who should be there, who shouldn't be there — we should respect the music and the history of SEPULTURA. And that's why I'm still on stage — because I really love what I do. It's amazing the respect and the love that the fans have for SEPULTURA. Even those that still don't like Derrick or they like Max and all the changes and all, they're still around — even talking good or shit. They're still part of the SEPULTURA life and the SEPULTURA family. And like I said, we're very excited about this new drummer — he's something really new for us, really fresh, he's playing so great and stuff, and let's see what happens. I mean, we still respect the spirit and the story of SEPULTURA, especially because we have this album, 'Dante', and we're gonna do our best and we're gonna enjoy what we do and let's see what happens."

Q: I asked Igor this question as well… Looking back on the whole split with Max and how that entire thing was handled, especially now that you see that not much progress has been made in rebuilding the relationship between you and Max in the last 10 years, do you wish that you could have handled that whole situation differently?

Andreas: "Yeah, I think Max leaving the band was just the tip of the iceberg. The whole relationship we had with Gloria [SEPULTURA's former manager and Max's wife]… I mean, the only regret I have was really to trust so much the manager, whatever the manager did. After Max left the band, we had to learn a lot about the business, to learn how to take care a little more about our own stuff and not to trust so much somebody. And, you know, he left the band and he pretty much had… it felt like he had the whole plan already going. I mean, he wanted with SEPULTURA what he's doing with SOULFLY — like have total control and stuff. I mean, you could say the first SOULFLY album, the only thing different there is the drummer, the bass player and the guitar player — everything else is the same as 'Roots'. That kind of relationship between the band and a manager that was really fucked up, because she came to be our manager first and then she got involved with Max and etc. Him leaving the band was just… the snowball was the biggest, so we couldn’t really handle the stuff. And of course, Max leaving and putting the letter in the magazines and all that stuff without us knowing, that was really fucked up and then only talking through lawyers and all that crap. It's something that's not going on right now. I mean, Igor and us still have a really good relationship besides all our disagreements regarding the stuff. We did all this together. The only thing I [questioned] was just the timing of the announcement, and stuff like that, but I like I said, we respect his decision, and we hope for the best. I mean, there's no reason, really, to talk shit about anybody. The way it happened 10 years ago, I think we're just a lot more prepared to handle this situation."

Q: Do you think that what happened now with Igor increases the chance of the "classic" SEPULTURA lineup ever coming back together or do you think that in some ways it makes it even less likely because Igor has kind of moved on?

Andreas: "I really don't know, man. It could go either way. I know there's a lot of people who want to make this happen — this reunion stuff — but I don't know…"

Q: In your opinion, what would it take for a reunion to happen?

Andreas: "I don't know. A relationship, you know. I think SEPULTURA was built on a relationship between us — growing up together, even though I joined the band a little later, but we grew up together as a band from then on. Everything we did together, and we talked to each other, and we discussed different opinions and ideas… I mean, it's not gonna happen through only lawyers and different buses and different dressing rooms and just meeting on stage and play the whole classic lineup, all the songs. I think we're capable of doing something really special, if we could do something together again, and maximize… I think to have the chance to do this again, it would be great, but it would have to be right. Because otherwise our fans will feel that and that would be a fucking disaster."

Q: So if somebody was to come to you and say, "We'll offer you this much money." Under those circumstances, you don't think that could happen. It would have to start with you having a relationship with Max, first of all.

Andreas: "Yeah, I think so. I mean, to practice and to at least respect each other's opinions and decisions. We don't have to agree with each other, but work for the best of the band. It's not because we're physically there on stage that the shit's gonna work. I mean, we just did the music we did because had an interaction together, we had a life together, we had agreements and disagreements, whatever — it was very healthy for the music of SEPULTURA. And I think that's essential. Besides all the money and all the structure and all the people involved, it would have to start from the inside to outside and not the opposite — I don't see it working that way. And it could be a disaster also — nothing really is certain that we could be together again and do great again. There's not a recipe to do it right again. I mean, if we had that going, I believe that would take time and stuff and a lot of conversation and a lot of talking and a lot of brainstorming, really, to make this happen. But any other kind of thing would be fake and it would be totally disrespectful to all our old fans and to the fans of the new phase and to Derrick and to Todd [manager] and to everybody involved in SEPULTURA. Here we have really to think in a calm [way] and respect SEPULTURA overall — respect everything we built together and to continue something special."

Q: You recently went to see SOULFLY in New York with Derrick. You didn't make any attempt to even try to talk to Max and most people don't understand why that is the case. Why can't you just go and talk to Max? Why didn't you try to talk to Max, just as a longtime friend, somebody you played with so many years?

Andreas: "I don't know. It's very difficult. It's been 10 years without talking to each other and, you know, he has a really strong army around him protecting his bunker, so to go there and try to talk to him… I've seen the roadies and seen a lot of people that I didn't see for a long time…"

Q: So they knew you were there?

Andreas: "Yeah, definitely. But we arrived like halfway through the set and we saw the end and stuff and… We did that once [before] in L.A. [back in 1998]. We were just in town and I don't see why not. It was great. The fans there were really happy to see us there and stuff, and there was no animosity in the air — it was really cool. We were just there to see this new lineup and to see Max on stage at least. I mean, to go there and try to talk to him, I think it would be kind of… That's not the way, I think, for it to happen. It could happen, but like I said, he's so much well protected and even the SOULFLY fans, it's very hard for them to get in touch with him."

SUTURE Sign With UNMATCHED BRUTALITY....

- June 17, 2006

Louisiana's "sickest" death metal act SUTURE have signed with underground label Unmatched Brutality to release their second full-length CD, "Skeletal Vortex". They are looking to enter the studio later this year.

SUTURE hail from the swamplands of Louisiana and have been brutalizing the southern reaches of the U.S. since 1998. The band released three demos — "Bloodsoaked", "In Cryptic Bliss", and "Deconstructing Anatomy" — followed by their 2002 debut CD, "Carnivorous Urge to Kill", which came out on U.S. label Deepsend Records.
