Reactivated Swedish death metallers DISSECTION, featuring guitarist/vocalist Jon Nödtvedt, have set "Maha Kali" as the title of their upcoming single.

“’Choice Cuts’ by Carcass”
by
Bill Vogel III

Friday, August 27, 2004 A.D.

One could blather on endlessly about the greatness of the legendary Carcass. And rightly so, because besides being one of the greatest Grindcore bands ever they evolved into one of the best Deathrock Metal acts before their untimely demise in 1997. The British act’s 2004 compilation of rarities and glories, titled “Choice Cuts” [Earache Records], is a glistening blade slathered in blood. It covers the span of their career, and is easily one of the BEST of 2004.

Shrill, powerful growls cut through the massive roar of guitars and intricate rhythms. Carcass is brutal yet melodic, with catchy hooks and crushing intensity. Lyrically, they read intelligent and poetic. (Think Poe meets a medical school book on dissection.)

Carcass is one of a kind.

Assembling both of the lusted after Peel Session recordings, along with a range of classic cuts, this disc shines with musical brilliance. The best tracks include “Buried Dreams,” the epic “No Love Lost,” the intricate aggression of “Heartwork,” the Grind slab “Incarnated Solvent Abuse,” “Corporal Jigsore Quandary,” “This Is Your Life,” “Reek of Putrefaction” (BBC Radio One Peel Session 01-02-1989), and wrecked resplendence of “Exhume To Consume” (BBC Radio One Peel Session 12-16-1990). Every track kills though.

Carcass is brutal and brilliant—a beautiful, gory perfection with few equals.

In summary, Carcass has released a masterpiece from beyond the grave. Few have done that. Stay savage. Farewell.

Horror And Metal Find A Home At Bloodworks....

By: Blabbermouth.Net Posted on: 08/27/2004

Producer/manager Christopher Tuffin, who has managed such metal acts as PAINMUSEUM, as well as members of the band HALFORD, has teamed up with former NFL star Glenn Cadrez to form a new horror entertainment company, BloodWorks.

Tuffin says that he wants to build stronger ties between the hard rock/metal community and the horror filmmakers.

"Like metal, horror isn’t just a genre - it's a way of life for a lot of fans," he said. "They both allow their artists to question authority, explore fears and lash out at the status quo, so it makes perfect sense to build their respective awareness via soundtracks, casting and other cross promotions that will expose each of them to a wider audience.
"We would like to do for 'metal' and 'horror' what companies like No Limit, Death Row and Roc-A-Fella have been to 'hip-hop' and 'urban' in terms of versatility and brand recognition," said Cadrez, who recently retired from the NFL after 11 seasons during which he garnered two Super Bowl rings as a member of the Denver Broncos.

BloodWorks (in association with Velvet Steamroller and Raw Nerve) just wrapped production on "2001 Maniacs", a remake of Herschell Gordon Lewis' cult classic "Two Thousand Maniacs!" The remake stars Robert Englund ("Freddy vs. Jason") and Lin Shaye ("There’s Something About Mary").

In addition to partnering with feature film consultants The Steel Company to produce, finance and distribute horror pictures, BloodWorks is also teaming with StudioWorks (a division of Ventura Distribution) to co-finance and distribute horror titles.

BloodWorks' upcoming slate of films includes another HG Lewis gorefest titled "Herschell Gordon Lewis' Grim Fairy Tales: Win, Lose or Die" (written and directed by Lewis) and "Across the Border", based on Gary Provost's true crime account of the Matamoros cult killings of the early '90s. A sequel to "2001 Maniacs" is also in the works.

Heathen Guitarist Lee Altus Comments On Bassist Switch....

By: Blabbermouth.Net Posted on: 08/27/2004

HEATHEN guitarist Lee Altus has commented on the recent addition of bassist Jon Torres to the group's ranks. Torres is no stranger to the Bay Area metal scene, having participated in such bands as THUNDERHEAD, WARNING SF, ULYSSES SIREN, LAAZ ROCKIT and ANGEL WITCH.

"We've known Jon for a long time and thrilled to have him join HEATHEN," said Altus. "Each of us has played with Jon throughout the years - in ANGEL WITCH, WARNING SF and other bands - so we're already familiar with his style, which will make this a seamless transition.

"We're sorry to see [previous bassist Mike 'Yaz' Jastremski] go and wish him all the best," Lee added. "He is a good friend and I'm glad that we parted ways without any animosity and can still remain best of friends. But at the same time we're very excited to have Jon step in and provide the stability we've been looking for. He brings a lot of experience with him and we're looking forward to working on the new album together."

HEATHEN's next live appearance will take place this Friday, August 27 at the Metro in Oakland with EXODUS and MAD AT SAM.

"It's been a while since we did any shows with [EXODUS], so I'm really looking forward to it," said Altus. "I heard that this place is kind of small so it looks like it's going to be a sweat box, just like in the old days!"

Former Emperor Drummer Talks About Passing Of Bathory Legend, Upcoming Projects....

By: Blabbermouth.Net Posted on: 08/26/2004

Former EMPEROR drummer Bard "Faust" Eithun has answered a number of fan questions via his official web site. Several excerpts follow:

On the passing of BATHORY frontman Quorthon:

Faust: "Anyone who have had a relationship to extreme music in one form or another will have come across the death of Quorthon, the mastermind of Swedish forefathers BATHORY. After his death, the hailing texts have been many. I will not be one of those who glorifies Quorthon and say how much he has meant to me. I never liked idolizing people. I happened to love the music of BATHORY and the creepy and eerie aura that surrounded the band, but to idolize is not for me. Anyway, there is no doubt that one of the originators of the true black metal movement has died. As a result of this I will appear in an all-star (!) cover band on the Bergen Hole in the Sky festival in August. Featuring people like Samoth, Apollyon, Grutle, Satyr, Abbath, Gaahl, Nocturno Culto and Ivar it is clear that it will be an honourable moment to perform the old BATHORY classic tracks."

On upcoming projects:

Faust: "I am still striving to get myself occupied musicwise. I am tired of people announcing different projects and name dropping the biggest stars just to get a 15 minutes of attention themselves. I don't care about 'stars' as long as I know I cooperate with a bunch of good guys. The era of rock- and metal stars ended with the 80ties."

On the possibility of a reunited EMPEROR with him in it:

Faust: "I don`t think so. Firstly, a reunion in itself is unlikely to happen. Secondly, if a reunion should happen by any chance it would be more right that it would be Trym because he can after all play the entire set of EMPEROR classics. Me, I can just do the tracks I participated on. Sometimes it`s better to let sleeping dogs still sleep. Why concentrate on the past when there is so much happening now?"

On whether he will become a full-time member of any other black metal projects:

Faust: "It's unlikely I will take part in a 100% black metal project, since the music and lifestyle doesn`t excite me as it once did. However, I like dark music with a twisted approach so something in the similar lines would be likely."

Darkthrone's Fenriz Explains Lack Of American Bands On 'black Metal' Compilation....

By: Blabbermouth.Net Posted on: 08/24/2004

DARKTHRONE's Fenriz recently spoke to Denmark's Antenna web site about his upcoming compilation of "the most influential and most unholy sounding tracks" of the black metal genre, due on September 20 through Peaceville Records. Entitled "Darkthrone's Fenriz Presents... The Best Of Old School Black Metal", the album features classic contributions from the likes of VENOM, BATHORY, SODOM, HELLHAMMER, BURZUM and MAYHEM backed up by sleeve notes from Fenriz providing an insight into each track, its relevance to him and its impact on the scene in general.

"It was my idea," Fenriz said of the collection. "As I am very interested in music generally, I of course find various compilations very helpful. It is a sturdy way to get to know a new musical style, to let a veteran guide you. I have always been making compilations for friends, arranged thrash metal nights etc, but the number one dream was to release a guide like this upon newer generations that are curious about what we black metal maniacs of the nineties listened to for our inspiration. And any others. If I can make one soul get into TORMENTOR after hearing my compilation, my work is already done".

Asked what criteria he used to select the tracks for the compilation, Fenriz responded, "I select from personal taste, experience, respect, diversity, and the fact that the style on this compilation is what you need to embrace to understand black metal. Otherwise, you are baking a cake without flour".

With regards to why American bands, such as SLAYER, have been excluded from the compilation, Fenriz said, "GOATLORD was impossible to track down - a very common problem concerning compilations. You can't always get what you want, as the ROLLING STONES sing. Larry Lalonde is sceptical about spreading the old vibes of POSSESSED to the black metal crowd, so we had to let that one go. SLAYER's first album is definitely an inspiration, but I rather prioritise them for my (eventual) thrash metal compilation. NECROVORE would be difficult to track down. VON should have been included. But as you see, suddenly half the CD would have been American bands. And that was not what we mostly listened to".

Fenriz's entire interview with Antenna is available at this location.

LUPARA, the Illinois-based band featuring former BROKEN HOPE guitarist Jeremy Wagner, recently relocated to Mercenary Digital Studios in Zion, IL where they are rehearsing and preparing to record close to 20 new songs. "We've spent the last few months (late spring and all of summer) basically writing and trying to move forward with the band," Wagner writes on the group's web site. In other news, LUPARA have announced the addition of guitarist Tom Brandner (ex-NUMSKULL) to the group's ranks. Jeremy hasn't been in a band with another guitarist since BROKEN HOPE, and "it's an exciting time for LUPARA as Tom has brought in a new dimension to the band with his riffing and added melodies to certain songs," according to a post on the web site.

LUPARA's three-song demo/promo CD can be ordered by sending $4.00 (preferably in the form of a money order) to: Jeremy Wagner, P.O. Box 445, Gurnee, IL 60031-0445, USA. All CDs come with a free sticker and a signed photo.
