Former DEICIDE Guitarist Says GLEN BENTON Lied To The Public About Tour Cancellations....

- Jan. 14, 2005

Ex-DEICIDE guitarist Eric Hoffman has hit back at DECIDE frontman Glen Benton, calling Glen's anti-Christian public stance "a show" and accusing his former bandmate of "lying to the public to save his ass" about recent tour cancellations.

In a lengthy statement sent to BLABBERMOUTH.NET, Hoffman said, "I, Eric Hoffman, hired Glen Benton from a local music magazine. His name was 'Rock.' He was a terrible singer at the time, so we hired a friend of ours from DEGRADATION to sing. He was very good, but could not phrase the song properly. Then Glen tried to show him how the lyric phrasing should be since he wrote the lyrics and he did it in a growl. I said, 'That sounds like the devil, so act like you're the devil for a gimmick.' We then let the other singer go.

"As far as Steve [Asheim, drums] writing all the songs, that is a joke. He has written a few, and they were always arranged by me. All songs are arranged by me, and he knows it. Glen listens to variations of the songs and it always goes back to the way I arranged it.

"Recently Glen took publishing money and he lied to the public to save his ass about cancellations, short sets and practice. On the contrary, that is why Brian [Hoffman, guitar] and I left. We now are in legal matters with Glen and Earache [Records]. Earache sends all royalties, merchandise money and publishing to Glen.

"The theme to the video Earache made was Glen's idea. I wanted DEICIDE to have a evil video, not him riding on a motorcycle. They should have made a killer video, jamming in hell in front of Satan while demons mosh.

"I never saw him once worship the devil. He was married in a church. It is all a show.

"He never could do long sets. We have been trying to get him to play more 'Legion' songs for years and many others. Mr. Benton only had to add more than ten songs recently in Europe to save his ass. We always told him to do more songs; even the fans did. We wanted to do the new material to play live, and he did not show up for practice to learn them. Even the record company knows that, right, Al [Dawson, Earache's U.S. label manager]?!

"He did not play all his bass lines in the studio, could not do technical riffs.

"I recorded one of my songs 'The Pentecostal' on his bass. Steve has done almost all his bass lines on all previous albums. I actually had to buy him a bass because he was so unprofessional.

"[He] never showed up for practice, for six months at a time. A few years ago, he tried to take a bunch of gig money. Then he said to my face he did not give a shit about the band, the fans or me. So I kicked his ass.

"I have never seen a check or a real statement for merchandise. There are a lot of DEICIDE shirts around; another lawsuit in the works for Blue Grape [merchandising company] soon.

"He was fired numerous times for not showing up, even Steve told him to get lost and he always came back. He writes the lyrics while we are in the studio.

"And there are other topics.

"No one said anything about his simulating sex sounds of him getting it in the rear on 'Torment In Hell'. That is why I did not do solos on that record.

"Steve's drumming, I had to make him hit the snare with two sticks because he could not blast fast enough for the new songs. Notice on all 'Scars of the Crucifix' songs super-blast beats, two sticks are hit in a roll manner and a simulated ride is added.

"Note: my brother is building some awesome guitars, and we will have a new band in the near future.

"Next will be a video of Mr. Benton's studio work. Check out his posture laying on end of couch. Every sound engineer said he was the worst bass player they ever heard. Scott Burns and Neil [Kernon] can tell that one someday."

MEGADETH Frontman Completes 'Peace Sells' Song For 'Rock School' Soundtrack....

- Jan. 14, 2005

MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has posted the following message in the "Forums" section of the group's official web site:

"Well, [Wednesday, Jan. 12] was very interesting indeed. I was approached to sing over a cover version of 'Peace Sells' for a movie/soundtrack. This version was done by young kids from the 'real' 'School of Rock', the story that Jack Black based his hilarious comedy film on.

"Things got interesting when I got to the studio and Lance said that the producers never sent the drives with all of the tracks on it. Uh, whoops?!?

"So, hours are grumbling by, and we finally get the track downloaded off of the Internet, but naturally it is not in the correct format. Now, a great deal of time later we finally start working and things are clicking. I only had to make a slight adjustment to the arrangement, but excluding that, these kids were terrific!

"Thank God for that, because from the moment I walked back into Phase Four, I absolutely hated it. It seems that the owner has built a patio over the parking lot, got a liquor license, and now runs a very public bar over what SHOULD be a very private studio.

"I asked him (the owner) about having the place locked out (which means I am the only one there — that's how I like to work) because I heard a lot of people talking and he said, 'I specifically said there was a bar now, and no one was to come down these steps, blah, blah, blah, biddy-boop a lop, an a jizz jazz a razz.' I guess you can see I turned off my ears while he was playing hot shot telling me about his 'bar' meanwhile a wanker bartender comes down the steps right after his sermon.

"I had hoped to have time to go see Mike Learn, Mike Ferguson — the fabricator making the new drum rack (so we can get rid of the one Nick played), and get my ears lowered, but the day was completely shot. I did however see Ralph Patlan and we talked about a lot of cool stuff coming up. I wish you all could meet this dude; he is awesome!

"Anyway, 'Peace Sells' has now been officially sung by me with the 'School of Rock' kids and will be hopefully in yer sweaty mitts sometime soon. If not for the (hopefully) awesome version that these kids did, then just for the fact that they are little guys playing MEGADETH.

"Thanks to my dear friend Bob Chiappardi [president of Concrete Marketing] for the tremendous opportunity to get outside of the box and do something that I would not normally do. And thanks to the kids and the 'School of Rock' for even thinking about me. I look forward to meeting you all personally someday soon."

GOD FORBID Enter Studio May 1; Headlining Tour Set For April....

- Jan. 14, 2005

GOD FORBID are currently hard at work writing material for their highly anticipated new album, "IV: Constitution Of Treason", set for a fall release. The group will enter the studio on May 1 to begin recording the follow-up to the critically acclaimed "Gone Forever", which garnered mainstream praise and helped expose them to a whole new audience. GOD FORBID recently wrapped up a massive European tour alongside MACHINE HEAD and CALIBAN before closing out the year back in America on the Stillborn Festival with HATEBREED and AGNOSTIC FRONT, among others.

Dallas Coyle (guitars) checks in with the following report: "What's up everyone?! Here I am to let you in on the shenanigans and the rock. We have a bunch of stuff going on in the next couple months. Right now, we've just confirmed a tsunami relief show on Jan. 20th at the Virgin Megastore in Times Square (NYC). Our friends THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN are also playing. It's a special day because Virgin is having bands play on this day all across the country, and we're very happy to be a part of it. We also just found out we're going to be part of a 'Uranium' special called 'Future Headliners'. It airs in mid- February, and they will be letting you all know how we're doing it in 2005.

"Speaking of headlining, we are currently booking our first-ever headline tour for the month of April, our first tour since the infamous Ozzfest. It's only going to be four weeks, and we're looking to have a really cool and heavy lineup. After we finish the tour we're going into the studio on May 1st to start tracking the next record 'IV: Constitution Of Treason'. So far the material we have is very different from what we have written before and the band is very excited about it. As Ron Burgundy would say, 'It's the balls.' Keep it classy Forbids."

STRAPPING YOUNG LAD: New Song Available For Download....

- Jan. 14, 2005

A brand new STRAPPING YOUNG LAD track, entitled "Shitstorm", has been made available for download at this location.

"Shitstorm" comes off the group's highly anticipated fourth studio album, "Alien", due on March 22 via Century Media Records.

Beginning February 8, the first segment of "The Making of Alien" will be online and a new installment will be posted each Tuesday leading up to the album's release.

STRAPPING YOUNG LAD documented their entire recording process, and the first four parts will provide an in-depth look into Armoury Studios (KISS, VAN HALEN) where mastermind Devin Townsend (vocals, guitars) describes how the album was assembled. Also, for the first time, fans can witness how Gene Hoglan (ex-DEATH, TESTAMENT), Byron Stroud (now also in FEAR FACTORY) and Jed Simon lay their tracks down. The final three parts of this series will focus on the more technical aspects (gear, settings, samples, etc.) of the recording.

The follow-up to the group's critically acclaimed 2003 release "SYL", "Alien" is being described by the label as "frontman Devin Townsend's personal cathartic outlet to unleash all of his angst, and it proves to be a very positive therapeutic experience for both him and his fans."

Former ADEMA Frontman Joins Forces With FILTER Members In New Project....

- Jan. 14, 2005

Former ADEMA vocalist Marky Chavez — half-brother of KORN frontman Jonathan Davis — has finally broken his silence regarding his departure from the group.

In a letter sent to the MarkyChavez.com fan site, Marky writes, "When ADEMA signed a new deal with Earache Records, I was excited to try and recapture the sound that we had on the first ADEMA record. When we started writing the record, things just didn't work like they had in the past. I take full responsibility for the personal problems that I had. On the other hand, it takes two to tango, if you know what I mean.

"Kris [Kohls, ADEMA drummer] and I had an argument over the direction the band should go in and I decided that it was time for me to leave the band. I wished them luck on their new band and even agreed to let them use the name ADEMA.

"It sucks that we don't even speak anymore, but I guess that's the way things go sometimes!

"I have started a new band with the guitar player and bass player of FILTER! I can't wait to let the world hear this new music. It's the best stuff I have ever been a part of.

"The band is located out of Chicago and we are taking meeting with labels and management! We should have a record coming out toward the latter part of this New Year!

"I really would like to thank all the ADEMA fans that have not forgotten about me, and they won't be disappointed with this new band and record.

"All things happen for a reason, and I am proud of what I did with ADEMA, but this new project is what I have wanted to do for a long time!"

As previously reported, ADEMA have announced the addition of REWIND YESTERDAY singer Luke Caraciolli to the group's ranks. The band are currently hard at work on their Earache Records debut, "Planets", tentatively due in early April. A single, entitled "Tornado", will precede the album during the coming weeks. 16 tracks will be included on the follow-up to 2003's "Unstable", which will reportedly come with a bonus DVD. A photo of the group's new lineup can be viewed at Earache.com.

KATAKLYSM Announce New Album Title, Tentative Release Date....

- Jan. 14, 2005

KATAKLYSM vocalist Maurizio Iacono has issued the following update on the band's current and future activities:

"We've been working non-stop on our new album since last fall, on tour and in between touring. I've been receiving MP3 files from the rehearsals here in Chicago from J-F [guitarist Jean-Francois Dagenais] and things are going right on point. I'll be going to Montreal in March after the DANZIG tour to work on the record with the guys and work the arrangements.

"The transition from Martin [Maurais, former drummer] to Max [Duhamel] has been very smooth and what Max is putting in the new songs is just phenomenal and nothing to take away from Martin but it just sounds more like us now less mechanical and more human and that is what KATAKLYSM is about. It's all about good songs, well arranged and well done without deviating from who you are… not about being the heaviest and fastest in the world. It's also about doing tracks that will make the test of time and that is what we set out to do.

"We will keep working hard on this album to give you the best we have to offer.

"On that note, we have set the title 'In the Arms of Devastation' for the next album. Nuclear Blast have set a tentative October 17 release date but you might have to wait 'till early 2006, because until we have chills listening to the new material.. it ain't coming out! KATAKLYSM have also confirmed their appearance at the Metal Camp open air festival in Slovenia on June 23rd and 24th and will do a mini-tour with friends and labelmates GRAVEWORM that will end at the With Full Force Festival in Germany July 4th."

Manager: New DAMAGEPLAN Recordings May Surface....

- Jan. 14, 2005

Although DAMAGEPLAN may be finished as a touring entity in the wake of last month's on-stage murder of guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, the group's manager told Billboard.com another release is likely. DAMAGEPLAN's lone album was its 2004 Elektra debut, "New Found Power".

"There were recordings the band laid down prior to Dimebag's death that are near completion," manager Paul Bassman tells Billboard in his first interview since the incident. "[Drummer/Abbott's brother] Vinnie Paul has said there will be a follow-up album down the road, as Dime would have wanted his music to be heard."

Bassman adds, "The outpouring of kind thoughts, sadness and condolences have meant so much to all of us. On behalf of all the families impacted by this horrible tragedy, let me share a public acknowledgement of our gratitude."

Abbott was shot to death by disgruntled fan Nathan Gale during a Dec. 8 performance at Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio. Jeff "Mayhem" Thompson, who handled road security for the band, was also shot and killed, as were Erin Halk, who worked at Alrosa Villa in a security role, and Nathan Bray, who was reportedly trying to help Dimebag when he was gunned down. The band's drum tech, John "Kat" Brooks, and tour manager, Chris Paluska, are still recovering from gunshot wounds.

"How this man got onstage without encountering security is the most puzzling question," Bassman says.

"All clubs should be prepared for whatever presents itself to protect any artist they have contracted to perform on their stage," he continues. "In this particular case it may or may not have helped, but it certainly would not have hurt. Hopefully, a tragedy such as this will never be repeated."

THROWDOWN Prepare To Record New Album....

- Jan. 14, 2005

THROWDOWN are about to enter the studio with producer Zeuss (HATEBREED, SHADOWS FALL) to begin work on their new album, "Vendetta", and the band, as always, are on a mission.

"We want to remind the hardcore and metal world what this music is and isn't about, because some people seem to have forgotten," proclaims singer Dave Peters, matter-of-factly. "We wrote these songs to crush all the trendy bullshit out there, and we're going to do just that."

"Vendetta" follows the band's landmark album "Haymaker", a to-the-point tour de force slab of bludgeoning self-motivational venom that redefined the beautifully uncomplicated side of the metallic-hardcore genre when it was released in 2003.

The album spawned the "Headbanger's Ball" staple "Forever", a new anthem to rally behind for a generation hungry for their own EARTH CRISIS or BLACK FLAG. And it opened doors for THROWDOWN to show up on the Ozzfest second stage and to hit the road with LAMB OF GOD, HATEBREED, FEAR FACTORY, NORMA JEAN and more.

"Haymaker" drew favorable comparisons in the press to SEPULTURA and PANTERA while rightly aligning the band with the burgeoning Orange County hardcore scene and the so-called New Wave of American Heavy Metal embodied by bands like KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and SHADOWS FALL.

"We make it a point to make each record twice as brutal as the one that preceded it and we were worried that we couldn't do that after 'Haymaker'. But two weeks into the writing process for 'Vendetta', we just had to laugh," says Peters. "These songs destroy that album."

A few of the songs THROWDOWN will carry in their new arsenal when they enter Planet Z Studios next month include "Shut You Down", "Burn", "I'd Give My Life", "This Discipline", and the undoubtedly crowd-motivating sing-along ready "And We Rise".

Guitarist Matt Mentley, bassist Dom Macaluso, drummer Ben Dussault and Peters have spent the new year fine-tuning material they wrote over the past year, some of it on the tour bus and in the van. "We're making the heaviest record of 2005, unless MESHUGGAH goes into the studio," Dave says, laughing. "Then we'll be making the second heaviest record of the year."

While people will have to wait until July to get their hands on "Vendetta", there will be no break in the chances to see the band live. THROWDOWN will headline a two-week U.S. tour in early March with support coming from THE CHARIOT and IT DIES TODAY. And following that, they'll be all over the U.S. and Canada with their friends in AS I LAY DYING.

"Everyone has that one or two special records that makes them want to punish everyone that ever wronged them. We want to make that record for today's hardcore and metal kids," Dave says. "An album that does what PANTERA's 'Vulgar Display Of Power' and SEPULTURA's 'Chaos A.D.' did for us. We won't be satisfied until we've made that album."

VELVET REVOLVER To Begin Putting Together Ideas For New Album In The Fall....

- Jan. 14, 2005

VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Slash has told Rolling Stone magazine that the group are planning to get cracking on their second record in the fall.

"As soon as we get off the road, we want to start getting the next record done and get it out," he said. "We don't want to lose momentum."

The band already have plenty of material to follow up their 2004 chart-topping debut, "Contraband". "We've got tapes and tapes of stuff that we've been writing at soundcheck," Slash said. "There should be more than an album's worth of material. And then there's all the stuff we wrote before we did the first record that we never really touched."

Slash also thinks that, with the orientation phase of the band over, their sophomore effort should come together more easily. "When we did this first record, it was like a bunch of kids in a sandbox all thrown in at one time," he said. "Now we've managed to play together as a band, grow as a band and get to know each other as a band."

THE PROJECT HATE To Enter Studio Next Week....

- Jan. 14, 2005

THE PROJECT HATE, the Swedish band featuring Jörgen Sandström of ENTOMBED/GRAVE fame on lead vocals, are set to enter the studio next week to start recording their fourth album (title not yet announced). Tentative plans are for the album to be released by Threeman Recordings in May.

THE PROJECT HATE were originally planning to record once again at Soundlab Studios in February with Mieszko Talarczyk (NASUM, GENOCIDE SUPERSTARS) producing, but those plans have since been abandoned. This album will be recorded and produced by Dan Swanö at his studio in Örebro, Sweden.

"The material's been completed for a few months and we have been working on small details within the songs up 'till now, to make them even closer to perfection," the band write on their web site. "We have now nailed the tracks to what we want them to sound like. Eight or nine tracks are scheduled for the recording, depending on whether we decide to record a cover (not meant to be on the album though, but for something else) or not. Demos have been recorded at [guitarist] Lord K Philipson's home studio during the last weeks and it all sounds massive as hell. We have taken what we created on 'Hate, Dominate, Congregate, Eliminate' a step further and can honestly say this will be our most brutal effort to date, ofcourse without losing all the weird beats and techno-sounds incorporated since the beginning. You could probably say we have added more of those into the stuff, yet approaching a more death metal riff-based formula. A little over one hour of music is to be on the next album, and if you ever dug what we have done in the past, this will be what you have been waiting for since 'Hate, Dominate, Congregate, Eliminate'."

JIMI HENDRIX: 'Electric Ladyland: Classic Album' DVD To Surface In February....

- Jan. 14, 2005

Eagle Rock Entertainment will present another addition to the "Classic Album" series by one of the greatest guitarists of all time with the release of THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE's "Electric Ladyland: Classic Album" on DVD on February 22.

Released in 1968, "Electric Ladyland" represents a watershed in the flourishing career of Jimi Hendrix and is recognized today as one of rock music's landmark albums. Featuring some of Hendrix's most notable recordings including "Crosstown Traffic", "Voodoo Chile" and his cover of "All Along The Watchtower", "Electric Ladyland" saw Hendrix carrying '60 psychedelia into the studio, experimenting with multi-tracking and stretching his material to thicken the sound of the trio. It is astonishing to look back and realize this is only Hendrix's second album in his drastically brief career.

"Electric Ladyland: Classic Album" features archive film footage and interviews with many of those who were there for the ride including producer Eddie Kramer, Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, Steve Winwood and Chas Chandler. "Electric Landyland" runs approximately 60 minutes and has a list price of $14.98.

SLIPKNOT Percussionist: 'This Band Is Timeless'....

- Jan. 14, 2005

SLIPKNOT percussionist Chris Fehn (a.k.a. "No. 3") recently told the Edmonton Sun that not a day goes by that he and his bandmates don't rue the day they donned disguises for their live performance.

"Yeah, it sucks," he said in a phone interview, though he was quick to add that it's also "cool." Performing as monsters — think pinhead meets "The Silence of the Lambs" — is actually very "liberating," Fehn said. The musicians can do things they might not normally do if they were, well, normal.

"Now it's such a part of us that we kind of forget it's on," he said. "We don't know it any other way."

Although some of SLIPKNOT's music is scarier and more violent than anything MARILYN MANSON ever came up with, it has never got even a fraction of the flack. Why? Didn't take on the Christians, that's why.

Fehn explained, "We never pitched that whole religious angle. That's not what we're into. We're more into real emotions and the realness of everyday life. We're not a political or religious band. Who knows what all that crap's about anyway? Everything's so crooked now, it's like, whatever. We leave that to other bands. Not that we don't have a personal interest in it, but as far as our music goes, it's not something we play into."

Overall, SLIPKNOT's new material suggests this band isn't just a one-trick nu-metal monster. Fehn said he expects everyone in his band to be playing music well into his 60s.

"This band is timeless," he said. "There are no heroes in the world right now, unless you got to see METALLICA or something like that, and I think we fit that role. We're something kids can grab hold of and still enjoy when they're in their 40s. I've liked METALLICA since I was 11 years old. Twenty years later, I'm touring with them and I'm still watching every show. I just love it. I think we're that next band."

Even with masks?

"This band is just non-stop. We've got so much talent and so many variables in this band that it could last forever."

MÖRK GRYNING Split Up; Final Demo Recordings Posted Online....

- Jan. 13, 2005

Sweden's MÖRK GRYNING have officially split up. A posting on the group's web site from the band's multi-instrumentalist Jonas Berndt (a.k.a. Goth Gorgon) reads as follows:

"MÖRK GRYNING is no more. Yesterday I called everyone in the band and told them I'm leaving.

"I know many people will be disappointed because of this decision I've made, but I'm afraid it was something I had to do. Black or death metal simply doesn't attract me in the way it used to do. I've always loved what we have done but I have lost the spark you so dearly need when you're in a band like this.

"Thanks to all old and new fans who has supported us during the years. We have decided to publish the material we have been working on the latest months, and you can download the songs below."

The demo songs available for download are as follows:

01. The Aurora (mp3)
02. All Discarded (mp3)
03. Disguise My Parting (mp3)
04. Pure (mp3)

SENTENCED Guitarist Comments On New Album....

- Jan. 14, 2005

More details have been revealed about the new album from Finland's SENTENCED, tentatively due in April via Century Media Records.

The follow-up to 2002's "The Cold White Light" was recorded primarily at Finnvox and Tonebox studios (both in Finland), and mixed and mastered at Finnvox. Producing the effort was again Hiili Hiilesmaa, who also worked with the group on their last two albums, 2000's "Crimson" and "The Cold White Light".

Commented guitarist Sami Lopakka: "What you can expect is a variation of different kinds of songs, and for sure some surprises. In addition to the traditional instruments we used everything from scissors, zippers, compressed air and spoons to harmonicas and a children choir… but not to worry: as far as I understand anything anymore, we still have managed to maintain a sense of style.

"The general feel and overall sound are more aggressive than on our latest few albums, but there are also songs that are based more on emotion and atmosphere. Lyrical themes include death (surprise, surprise?), life, loss, love, unity, disappointment and revenge, but only to start with. Overall, there's perhaps more depth in the lyrics, as well as in the music, than ever before. I think some, if not all songs will definitely take a dozen spins before fully 'opening' to the listener.

"Well, enough words. This was the most intense, stressful, emotional and rewarding album session I have ever gone through. We are proud of what we have done and eager to hand it over to you for listening. That will be in April."

The as-yet-untitled effort has a total running time of 49:53 and will include the following songtitles:

01. May Today Become the Day
02. Ever-Frost
03. We Are But Falling Leaves
04. Her Last 5 Minutes
05. Where Waters Fall Frozen
06. Despair-Ridden Hearts
07. A Long Way To Nowhere
08. Vengeance Is Mine
09. Consider Us Dead
10. Lower The Flags
11. Drain Me
12. Karu
13. End Of The Road

Police: Killer Didn't Say Anything To DIMEBAG Before Shooting Him....

- Jan. 13, 2005

Ohio's NBC 4 is reporting that the man who killed four people at the Alrosa Villa nightclub last month, including former PANTERA guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, had several unused rounds before he was shot and killed by an officer, police said Thursday (Jan. 13).

Nathan Gale, 25, of Marysville, fired his weapon 15 times, police said. He had two magazines with 10 rounds in each in his semiautomatic handgun. He reloaded his weapon once, police said, and there were five rounds left in the magazine after he was shot.
NBC 4 reported that Gale's mother legally purchased the weapon, a Baretta, model 92FS.

Police also said that Gale, a former Marine, did not say anything prior to his shooting rampage. There were several rumors from people inside the club who said they heard Gale say something to Abbott before shooting him.

Authorities said they did not know the order the victims were shot Dec. 9, but were investigating.

Columbus police Officer James D. Niggemeyer, who arrived in the nightclub less than one minute earlier, shot and killed Gale. Niggemeyer has not spoken publicly about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

STORMWITCH Name New Album....

- Jan. 13, 2005

STORMWITCH frontman/founding member Andy Mück has set "Tears of Rage" as the title of the group's tenth studio album, tentatively due in late 2005/early 2006 via Nuclear Blast Records.

Mück is in the process of rehearsing with several new musicians after the rest of the group's most recent lineup — guitar players Fabian Schwarz (ex-TYRAN PACE) and Martin Winkler (ex-NIGHTWOLF), bass player Dominik Schwarz, keyboardist Alexander Schmidt (ex-TYRAN PACE) and drummer Marc Oppold (ex-TYRANT) — decided to leave the band due to irreconcilable professional differences.

According to Nuclear Blast, Andy has decided not to feature keyboards on any future STORMWITCH recordings, but will continue to utilize a two-guitar format.

STORMWITCH, who count HAMMERFALL guitarist Oscar Dronjak as one of their biggest fans (HAMMERFALL used to play a cover version of the STORMWITCH track "Ravenlord"), released their ninth album, "Witchcraft", last November through Nuclear Blast Records.

MY FATE: New Song Available For Download....

- Jan. 13, 2005

Finnish metallers MY FATE have uploaded a new track, entitled "Cold Hive of Death", at this location.

"Cold Hive of Death" comes off the group's upcoming sophomore album, "Kill the Light", due in Finland on April 18. A worldwide release will follow a short time later.

MY FATE entered the studio last November begin recording the CD, which will be "massive-sounding, diverse, dark and heavy as hell," according to the band.

"Kill the Light" projected track listing:

01. Sacrilegehymn
02. Cold Hive Of Death
03. Distinction
04. Dead Man
05. Baneflow Cycle
06. The Claw
07. I Buried You
08. Totalitarian
09. Dim The Light
10. Embody Me
11. The Darkness Beckons

Commented MY FATE guitarist Jaakko Järvensivu: "When we wrote songs for the second album, we wanted to change the song structures a little and bring in some new influences. The riffs and beats have become more challenging. A clearly new thing is that we have some cool guitar harmonies there, and though the songs are filled with hooks, they're not so obvious. We have been influenced by thrash and even death metal, but the dark and soulful parts are still present. They're just darker and more soulful than before. The guitars leave more space to the bass, and the vocals are more diverse and brutal than on 'Happiness Is Fiction'. The songs are arranged way better and they really challenge the listener. The album will also be much faster than its predecessor."

Former NIRVANA Bassist To Release Solo Album....

- Jan. 13, 2005

Former NIRVANA bassist Krist Novoselic told the Tacoma News Tribune that some of the music he has been working on during the recent months may surface later in the year. He said, "I'm still making music. I have my studio, and I'm recording things and I have as much fun as possible. But I have that luxury, and I can work on political things. So I can basically just go where my passion takes me." He referred to solo material he has been writing. When asked if it might come out, he replied, 'You might be surprised, like later in the year. It might all come together. Right now, I'm just doing it for myself, and that's what it's all about."

SYSTEM OF A DOWN Guitarist Says He Is Uncomfortable With Being Tagged A 'Political' Band....

- Jan. 13, 2005

SYSTEM OF A DOWN guitarist and chief songwriter Daron Malakian has told The Sydney Morning Herald that he is putting the finishing touches on two new studio albums — "Mesmerize", due this spring, and "Hypnotize", due this fall. He said he's not a perfectionist: "I just want it to be right, I don't nitpick at shit. I get the production credit on the record, and I get to be the [AC/DC guitarist] Malcolm Young of SYSTEM OF A DOWN.

"I respect those people. You look at SLAYER and you see Kerry King. I look at SLAYER and I see [songwriter-guitarist] Jeff Hanneman."

By his own reckoning, Malakian writes about 95 per cent of SYSTEM's music, including the lyrics. He bristles slightly at the suggestion that his band is a dictatorship.

"It's a democracy, everyone respects the way the band works, I don't step over anybody," he said. "I really don't want to sound like I'm discrediting my band members here because I'm not. It's really how SYSTEM works. Serj [Tankian] writes songs but not in bulk the way I write songs ... It works as a team."

Although frontman Tankian co-founded the activist group Axis of Justice with AUDIOSLAVE's Tom Morello, Malakian is uncomfortable with SYSTEM being tagged a "political" band.

"We just sing about what the world, about what's around us," he said. "We have political songs and we have songs about, y'know, psycho-groupie-cocaine crazy.

"Somebody asked me, 'Are you guys about sex, drugs, rock'n'roll, politics, having a good time?' I said, 'Yes!' We're not about a history lesson, like, 'You gotta learn all about the Armenian genocide' or all about politics. We're not only about that and we're not only about sex, drugs and rock'n'roll, we're like a f---ed-up mutation of all that shit."

IRON MAIDEN: 'The Number Of The Beast' Single On Track To Remain In U.K. Top 10....

- Jan. 12, 2005

According to the IRON MAIDEN fan site MaidenFans.com, the latest U.K. midweek single chart indicates that MAIDEN's reissue of their classic single, "The Number of the Beast", will remain in the Top 10 after landing at No. 3 in its first week of release. The single, which came out on January 3, currently occupies the No. 9 position on the midweek single chart.

As previously reported, EMI re-released "The Number of The Beast" as a single in celebration of IRON MAIDEN's phenomenal 25-year history and in keeping with the recent international chart success of their double DVD, "The Early Years".

The title track of the band's third (and first No 1!) album, this single was a Top 20 hit when originally released in 1982, and is rightly regarded as an all-time MAIDEN classic. This song typifies the band's sound signature of that era, from the chilling spoken introduction to the throat ripping opening scream from Bruce Dickinson. The single was released in three very special limited-edition formats, featuring never-before-available live recordings from the Clive Burr charity shows at Brixton Academy in March 2002.

IRON MAIDEN To Headline England's LEEDS FESTIVAL....

- Jan. 12, 2005

According to LeedsToday.net, IRON MAIDEN are being tipped as one of the main attractions at England's Leeds Festival, which is due to take place over the August Bank Holiday weekend at Bramham Park, near Wetherby, its home since 2003.

If the rumors prove to be true then MAIDEN's capture will be something of a coup.

The band are currently enjoying one of their biggest hits in years, with the re-release of their 1982 single, "The Number of the Beast", going into the charts at No. 3 on Sunday.

They also remain a hugely popular live act, recently selling nearly 90,000 tickets in the space of a few hours for a series of dates in Scandinavia.

Other stars said to be in the frame for this year's festival, meanwhile, include British guitar outfit MUSE and New York art-rockers THE STROKES.

More than 50,000 fans attended last summer, when the bill included MORRISSEY, THE DARKNESS and 50 CENT.

OBITUARY Frontman Talks About Upcoming Album....

- Jan. 12, 2005

OBITUARY frontman John Tardy recently did an interview with Sweden's Global Domination about the group's upcoming album and the group's current label situation, among other topics. A couple of excerpts from the interview follow:

Global Domination: Last I heard you guys were pretty much done with writing the new album and just needed to get into the studio to record it. Have you decided on where you are recording and who will be producing this thing?

John Tardy: "We will be working with Mark Prator at the Redroom as well as at Morrisound. We hope to have Scott Burns come in and help out also. We still haven’t decided who will produce it yet but we are talking with a few different people."

Global Domination: About Morrisound Recording... Do you have any idea as for why all their productions sound so extremely low volume-wise? I mean, "Cause of Death" is one of the finest albums in death metal ever, but you have to crank the fucken volume to get some feeling out of it. The same goes for pretty much every other album recorded there.

John Tardy: "Not sure! All the volume levels are set during mastering which Morrisound wouldn’t have anything to do with. I haven’t noticed it personally, but you may be right. One of the hardest things to do is get your music to sound like you want it to in the studio. You sit and listen to every song so many times that it becomes hard to think with a fresh ear. Through the years I think we have gotten better at getting this done."

Global Domination: How would you compare these new songs to some of your older work? Are you following the same formula you used on the classic albums, or will we be surprised with OBITUARY's new sound?

John Tardy: "I listen to the new songs everyday so it is hard for me to say. I think we have a very classic OBITUARY sound and feel to a lot of the songs."

Global Domination: What about a label, I'm sure there was a ton of them circling like hungry sharks when they heard you were doing a new album. Did you decide to go with Roadrunner again? Does Roadrunner even have an interest in death metal music any more?

John Tardy: "RR seems interested in doing our new album and we owe them one more. We are still working with them and it looks like they will be doing it at least one more time."

Global Domination: I think we have finally all heard the final reports on what happened in Ohio with DAMAGEPLAN and Dimebag's murder. I read the statements you and Trevor made and it sounded like you knew him, or at the least met the guy before. Do you think we are going to see big changes in shows now as fans with security and such, or do you see this as something so far out of the ordinary that it could never happen again?

John Tardy: "I did know him and it is really sad. He will be missed and I wish his family the best. I think this does change things. Security is important to everyone’s safety not just the band members. Concerts are there for people to have a good time and let lose and clubs need to do whatever it takes to make that possible!"
